Why Use Fósforo Mezcal in a Paloma?
Fósforo Mezcal Ensamble is handcrafted in Puebla from a blend of Espadilla and Tobalá agave, producing a mezcal that’s smooth, layered, and naturally elegant. With flavor notes of white pepper, papaya, and roasted agave, it’s a perfect match for the sweet-tart combo of strawberry, grapefruit, and lime.
The subtle smoke from Fósforo rounds out the fruity brightness, while its full-bodied structure holds its own in an effervescent drink. This mezcal grapefruit cocktail is a fresh take on tradition – elevated, refreshing, and full of life.
The History of the Paloma Cocktail
The Paloma (Spanish for “dove”) has long been a favorite across Mexico. Originally a simple mix of tequila and grapefruit soda, the Paloma’s appeal lies in its balance of tart, sweet, and bubbly. Over time, bartenders have embraced fresh juices and creative riffs – like this one – to take the Paloma into more refined territory.
The Strawberry Mezcal Paloma brings in muddled fruit and high-quality mezcal for a more modern, elevated take. It’s still bright and easy-drinking, but with a juicy punch and a depth that only comes from mezcal made in Puebla.
Tips for a Better Strawberry Mezcal Paloma
Use ripe strawberries for maximum sweetness and the perfect color.
Fresh-squeezed grapefruit and lime juice offer the best flavor balance.
Add a rim of salt to the glass for a savory edge that plays off the citrus
FAQ: Strawberry Mezcal Paloma with Fósforo Ensamble
Q: Can I use store-bought grapefruit juice?
A: Fresh is best, but high-quality bottled juice can work in a pinch. Ruby red adds a slightly sweeter flavor, while white grapefruit is more tart.
Q: Do I have to muddle the strawberries?
A: Yes, muddling releases the berries’ juice and flavor into the cocktail. If you prefer a smoother texture, you can fine strain before serving.
Q: Can I use club soda instead of sparkling water?
A: Yes, both work well. Just be sure it’s unsweetened so it doesn’t overpower the fresh ingredients.
Q: Is this cocktail sweet or tart?
A: It strikes a balanced profile – juicy from the strawberries, bright from citrus, and lightly sweetened with simple syrup.
Q: Is Fósforo Mezcal additive-free?
A: Absolutely. Fósforo is 100% natural with no sugars, flavorings, or artificial ingredients – just agave, time, and tradition.
Q: What makes Fósforo different from other mezcals?
A: Fósforo is made in Puebla from agave native to Puebla using artesanal methods. Its flavor is smooth, balanced, and designed to be mixed or sipped – offering a less smoky profile than many traditional mezcals.
